Sunday at my
mom’s table

I found this photo while sorting through a box at my mom’s house. My sister and I have been trying to put names to everyone in it.

A black-and-white family photograph around the kitchen table
Sunday lunch, around 1964. We’re still checking the date.

We went to my mom’s for lunch most Sundays. I didn’t think much about it at the time. My brother and I usually wanted to eat quickly so we could go outside, and the adults would stay at the table talking.

I found this photo in a box at her house last month. I recognized my dad straight away, but I wasn’t sure about the woman sitting beside him. I sent it to my sister. She thinks it’s our aunt Jean, before she cut her hair short.

“Is that Uncle Peter on the end? I don’t remember him having a moustache.”

That was my brother’s first response. We’ve since worked out who most people are, though we disagree about the year. My sister says 1964. Dad thinks it was later because he remembers buying that table after they moved.

I’ve added what we know here. If you recognize anyone, or have another photo from that day, leave a note. I’d especially like to know who was taking the picture.

Alex

Grandma, can you tell me about where you were born?

Emma

I was born on a farm just outside town. There were four of us children, and most afternoons someone from the next farm would squeeze in too. Mum kept a pot of soup on the stove. You could come in muddy and tired, and there would still be a place for you.

Alex

Was there something she made that everyone asked for?

Emma

Apple pie. She never wrote the recipe down. A handful of this, a little more of that. Your aunt makes it now. She says the pastry is never quite right, but nobody leaves any on the plate.

A freshly baked apple pie with a golden crustMom and Dad’s Kitchen
FROM EMMA’S RECIPE BOOK

Mom’s Apple Pie

Use Granny Smith apples if you like it tart. Mom used whatever was on the tree, so it came out a little different every time.

Prep

Bake
50–60 min
Serves

Ingredients

  • Pastry for a 9-inch double-crust pie
  • 6 medium apples, peeled and sliced
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter, cut into pieces
  • 1 egg, beaten, for brushing

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 400°F. Line a 9-inch pie dish with half the pastry.
  2. Toss the apples with the sugar, flour, cinnamon and lemon juice. Tip into the dish and dot with butter.
  3. Add the top crust, crimp the edges and cut a few vents. Brush with egg.
  4. Bake for 20 minutes, then lower the oven to 375°F. Bake another 30–40 minutes, until the crust is golden and the filling bubbles. Cover the edges if they brown too quickly.
  5. Let it cool for at least 2 hours before slicing.

I add a little lemon zest to the pastry. Works well with the tart apples.

Made this on Sunday. Used a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp and cut the sugar to half a cup.

Alex’s variation · less sugar

Use ½ cup sugar instead of ¾ cup, with a mix of sweet and tart apples. Keep the rest of the recipe the same.

Alex’s Sunday apple pie

Less sugar · mixed apples

I used three Granny Smith apples and three Honeycrisps because that’s what we had. I cut the sugar to half a cup. The sweeter apples made up for it, and the filling still held together once the pie cooled. We ate it after lunch with vanilla ice cream.

What I changed

Use ½ cup sugar instead of ¾ cup, with three Granny Smith and three Honeycrisp apples. Everything else stays the same.

Lemon zest in the pastry

I followed Mom’s recipe and added the zest of half a lemon to the pastry. It was subtle, but I liked it with the apples. I also put a baking sheet under the dish, which was useful because some of the filling bubbled over. Next time I’ll leave it to cool longer before cutting it.

What I changed

Add the finely grated zest of half a lemon to the pastry flour before mixing in the butter.

The lemon zest is a good idea. Did you mix it in with the flour?

LW
Lily Williams

Yes, straight into the flour before the butter.
